CORNWALL, ON –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– Workers at two workplaces in Cornwall are uniting to protest ongoing job cuts. Their employer, the City of Cornwall, has laid off 14 inside city workers prior to scheduled bargaining, with no explanation. The City’s proposed scheduling changes also threaten another 29 direct care nursing jobs at Glen Stor Dun Lodge (GSDL).
“We are disturbed, and quite disheartened at the City’s job cuts” said Aileen Raven, President of CUPE 1792, representing Glen Stor Dun Lodge workers. “The wellbeing of Glen Stor Dun Lodge Residents is at the heart of everything we do. Cutting staff undermines the quality of care and dignity that Residents deserve. We cannot support any decision that takes us backward in service or compassion”.
“This should have never happened,” said Roxanne Rivette-Bancroft, President of CUPE 3251. “Local media has previously reported poor internal financial control by the employer. Workers shouldn’t have to pay the cost of bad management.”
The protest is scheduled to coincide with a meeting of City Council on Monday, where members of CUPE 1792 have brought their concerns multiple times in the recent past. Workers in both unions are calling for the public to join them at the rally and demand the City protect good jobs in the local community.
CUPE 1792 represents 183 workers in numerous roles including RPNs, PSWs, housekeeping, maintenance, and more. CUPE 3251 represents 205 workers in housing, social assistance, recreation, and leisure jobs.
