CORNWALL, ON –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– Members of CUPE 1792 held an information picket outside City Hall on Monday evening ahead of the City Council meeting. The workers were there to keep up the pressure on Cornwall City council following the rally they held along Montreal Road on September 12th. The Union is sounding the alarm about the proposed cut to staffing levels which threatened the care and well-being of the residents of Glen Stor Dun Lodge, a municipally run Long Term Care facility in the city.

“Management was saying that there are no cuts, but clearly there will be as per the “new schedule” they insist on implementing,” said Aileen Raven, President of CUPE 1792. “We need to keep up the pressure so council knows they need to put more resources into the lodge so that residents can get the quality of care they deserve. It’s not just about budget. It’s about human rights.”

CUPE 1792 members have been struggling with workload and staffing issues for a while, and any further cuts to staff resources could result in increased burnout among staff, as well as impacting the care residents need to live their final years in dignity.

The workers were joined by CUPE Healthcare workers from other facilities and other members of the community to help educate the public on the situation seniors are facing. Residents are being encouraged to send letters to their councillors calling on the city to increase staffing resources at the municipally run long-term care facility.
